We source our oregano from Turkey and these dried leaves will often carry more concentrated flavour than fresh leaves. It is a versatile herb that can be used in a variety of recipes. It works particularly well with tomato-based dishes such as pizza, Bolognese sauce and many other styles of Mediterranean cookery. Often referred to as the ‘pizza herb’, oregano is the clearly distinguishable aroma whenever you enter a pizza parlour.
Need some tips on using this herb?
Add oregano towards the end of the cooking process to maximise its flavour.
Use oregano a little at a time – allow the flavour to develop before adding too much as too much can cause the dish to taste bitter.
Crushing dried oregano in the palm of your hand before cooking can help release the essential oils trapped within the leaves.
If you run out of oregano, you can substitute it with marjoram (Country Range Marjoram 225g), however because of its milder flavour, you’ll need to use twice as much.
